CDC assisted the Ohio health department’s investigation of infections caused by Acinetobacter.CDC has worked with the Puerto Rico health department to control an outbreak of highly resistant Klebsiella at a neonatal intensive-care unit in Puerto Rico.CDC has collaborated with state health departments in Maryland and Arizona to successfully control outbreaks of Multidrug-resistant- Acinetobacter infections occurring among intensive care unit patients.In the past 3 years, the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion has assisted in at least 10 investigations of outbreaks of gram negative infections. ![]() Outbreak investigations have led to a better understanding of how to control these bacteria in healthcare. coli., as well as many other less common bacteria. Gram-negative infections include those caused by Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and E. CDC’s aggressive recommendations, if implemented, can prevent the spread of gram-negatives. These bacteria have built-in abilities to find new ways to be resistant and can pass along genetic materials that allow other bacteria to become drug-resistant as well. Gram-negative bacteria are resistant to multiple drugs and are increasingly resistant to most available antibiotics. Gram-negative bacteria cause infections including pneumonia, bloodstream infections, wound or surgical site infections, and meningitis in healthcare settings. Burning pain in the upper abdomen, accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting, is a symptom of gastritis, but peptic gastric or duodenal ulcers may ensue with additional symptoms and complications including bleeding and perforation.General Information about gram-negative bacteria Most are asymptomatic even after many years. Infections are limited to the mucosa of the stomach in which urease production enables survival in the acid milieu. Helicobacter pylori is also a curved, flagellated, small gram-negative rod that is distinguished by being catalase, oxidase, and ureaase positive. The illness resolves spontaneously after a few days to 1 week. The diarrhea may be watery or dysenteric, with blood and pus in the stool. Clinical disease with C jejuni typically begins with lower abdominal pain, which evolves into diarrhea over a matter of hours. Despite the profound physiologic effects, there is no fever, inflammation, or direct injury to the bowel mucosa.Ĭampylobacter jejuni is the most common of the pathogenic Campylobacter species all of which are curved, motile gram-negative rods. The pathogenesis is solely due to the action of cholera enterotoxin secreted by V cholerae in the bowel lumen. Intestinal fluids pour out in voluminous bowel movements, which untreated rapidly leads to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Although many infections are asymptomatic, epidemic cholera produces the most dramatic watery diarrhea known. Vibrio cholerae is a motile (flagellated), comma-shaped oxidase-positive gram-negative rod that grows best on specialized media.
